About the ILO Internship Programme

The ILO Internship Programme offers a unique platform for high-calibre students and recent graduates to engage directly with the organization’s daily operations and strategic initiatives. Internships run for three to six months, offering hands-on learning in areas aligned with the ILO’s mandate.


Whether your background is in economics, law, human rights, communications, public policy, or international relations, this internship gives you an inside look into the work of a UN specialized agency committed to promoting decent work for all.



Who can Apply?

To be eligible for the ILO Internship Programme, applicants must:

  • Be in the final year of a graduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) or be enrolled in a higher degree programme relevant to the ILO’s work; or

  • Have completed such a programme within the past year;

  • Have a working knowledge of at least one of the ILO’s official languages (English, French, or Spanish);

  • Be able to thrive in a diverse, multicultural environment;

  • Submit no more than three applications per recruitment round.


Note: There is no age limit, but close relatives of current ILO staff and those who have already interned at the ILO are ineligible.

Application Timelines and Deadlines

The ILO opens its Internship Roster two to three times a year. Internships may begin on the 1st or 15th of any month, depending on departmental needs.


Most application deadlines fall on or before 30 April 2025, but be sure to check specific dates per opportunity.

How to Apply


  1. Search for internship profiles via the ILO Jobs portal

  2. Select your preferred internship opportunity

  3. Create and complete your candidate profile

  4. Attach a strong cover letter (mandatory before the deadline — you won’t be able to add it later)


Important: You can apply for a maximum of three profiles per round. Exceeding this limit disqualifies your application.


Selection Process

After an initial screening by the Human Resources Development Department:

  • Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for interviews and/or written tests;

  • Interviews may be conducted via Skype, Zoom, or other virtual platforms;

  • If you are not contacted within six months, your application is considered unsuccessful for that round. You may reapply in the next cycle if still eligible.



Stipend and Logistics

  • Interns in Geneva receive 2,450 CHF/month;

  • If partially funded by another source (e.g., university), ILO provides the balance;

  • Travel, accommodation, visa, insurance, and living costs are the intern’s responsibility;

  • Interns must arrange their own insurance for health and accidents during the internship.
