Navigating The Public Sector Landscape As Professional Accountants

Accountants have been given insights to enable them understand how to effectively operate within the realm of government institutions, policies, regulations, and processes; at the 2nd Public Finance Management Conference (PFM), happening at the Source of the Nile Hotel, Jinja.

CPA Gloria Tuhaise Wakooba, the Deputy Director – Administration and Team leader – Innovation Hub at the Bank of Uganda advised accountants on how they can be able to maneuver through the complexities of government structures and bureaucracies to achieve specific goals or objectives.

According to her, this involves engaging with various government agencies, understanding legislative frameworks, complying with regulatory requirements, and leveraging government resources or services. Essentially, navigating the public sector landscape requires knowledge, skills, and strategies tailored to working within the context of government entities and systems.


“The profession sends us out there, to work in public interest, promote the brand and give the brand a unique identity through the different roles that we play, within the economy,” remarked CPA Wakooba.

Navigating conflict in public service requires a delicate balance between serving the public interest, adhering to organizational policies, and managing interpersonal dynamics.

Additionally, accountants play a crucial role in shaping public perception. They are ambassadors of the profession, with an obligation to promote its value and unique identity.


“Make sure you follow up any conversations you have with an email confirming the advice you gave. Keep accurate and up-to-date records of your steps. This will save you a lot of trouble moving forward,” advised CPA Wakooba.


By embracing these insights and strategies, professional accountants can navigate the public sector landscape more effectively, contribute to good governance, and promote the public interest.
